Is Google Making Us Stupid?
Written by NekoOuterverse on Monday, June 23, 2008 – 1:52 pm -While on a break, I ran across an article on The Atlantic that made me take pause and actually think about what was being said. It took me a few tries to read the whole thing, which actually is the whole point of the article.
The author, Nicholas Carr, to summarize his article basically states that thanks to fast access using search engines like Google, the internet has basically retrained people to not be able to accept large amounts of text input. The reasoning in part is that things need to be quick and speedy, leaving our bread crumbs for advertisers to pick through, so that instead of lengthy writings we now get blurbs to keep us ever moving along.
I have to admit, I feel I’m in the same boat as he is. He quotes HAL9000 in the article, but it’s a very appropriate one. “My mind is going. I can feel it.” Mr. Carr says he feels it too, and as do I.
(Here and I thought that only Something Awful & 4-chan made people stupid.)
